President Calvin E. Woodland, Ed.D., Psy.D.
Capital Community College welcomed Dr. Calvin E. Woodland in March, 2005 as the fourth President of the College. President Woodland has led Hartford’s two-year public college to a fall 2005 enrollment of 3,573 students, a four percent increase over 2004 enrollment. As an urban institution located in downtown Hartford, Capital remains one of New England’s most diverse campuses. Sixty-three percent of students are African American or Latino/a. During Dr. Woodland’s brief tenure, Capital has joined the Achieving the Dream Initiative, a long-term, Foundation-funded effort to increase the academic success of educationally disadvantaged individuals who are coming to community colleges in increasing numbers. Capital is among a group of 31 colleges selected nationally to participate in Achieving the Dream that seeks strategies and practices to improve student outcomes. Dr. Woodland brings more than 20 years of educational leadership experience to Capital’s presidency. In Hartford, he has joined the Board of Directors of the Greater Hartford Arts Council and Capital Workforce Partners. He has established the College as one of the Metro Hartford Alliance’s Strategic Partners. At the national level, he is President-elect for the AACC Affiliate, National Council for Black American Affairs Board, the National Advisory Transfer Network Board, and a member of the International Center for the Study of Psychiatry & Psychology. Prior to his appointment at Capital, he served as Vice President for Student Services at Bergen Community College, a comprehensive community college of nearly 15,000 students, located in Paramus, New Jersey. During his tenure at Bergen, Dr. Woodland served as a member of the Educational Advisory Committee for the Urban League of Bergen County, NJ and was selected as its Excellence in Education recipient in May, 2004. Other board and community affiliations included serving as a member of the Bergen County Youth Investment Board, the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Committee, and the Bergen County Professional Standards Committee for In Home Care and the New Jersey Department of Education’s Committee for Curriculum Standards. Dr. Woodland also served as Vice President for Student Development at Daytona Beach Community for eight years and was instrumental in expanding academic and student support services at that institution. He was appointed to serve on statewide planning councils to restructure the Human and Family Service agencies for Central Florida. In addition, he was appointed by the late Governor Lawton Chiles to chair the Juvenile Justice Board for that region of Florida. Dr. Woodland also served on several other boards to include the ACT Mental Health Corporation, the Daytona Beach Economic Development Committee, and the Children and Family Services Board. Previously, Dr. Woodland served as Campus Dean at Northern Virginia Community College and Dean of Student Development at Charles County Community College. His other professional and teaching experiences include serving as the Acting Dean at Coppin State College and teaching on the faculty in the Graduate School of Education at Morgan State University. Dr. Woodland holds the Doctor of Psychology degree from the Southern California University for Professional Studies and the Doctor of Education from Rutgers University. He is also a licensed Mental Health Clinician and is a frequent presenter at national and regional conferences addressing such issues as cultural differences and their implications in teaching and counseling. His memberships include the American Psychological Society, the American Association for Community Colleges, the National Council for Black American Affairs, the American Counseling Association and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
